Highways can at least fluctuate up and down on speed based on load, and eventually meet the speed limit. When it comes to networks, they don't see why they are not meeting what is advertised, ever. In traffic, you can at least find out it's due to a traffic jam a X location. The fact of advertised speed isn't met, and normal users are unable to see why. That's on the topic of speed limited by physical means. But I think I am being capped by Google or Valve here.Īre there any ways to test internet speeds in a sustained way? Or do I need multiple devices connected to really get the most of that bandwidth? Other tests I have tried were from Google Drive and steam where I was only getting about 400-500mbps. I am not sure if it is a problem on my end or with usenet at the moment.įor reference, on my old speed tier and old modem, I was getting 250-300mbps from usenet any given time for days. I took the router out of the equation and the desktop is hardwired directly to the cable modem with CAT6. They both start at about 700mbps, but after a few minutes, speeds slow back down to about 120mbps. I use usenet from either giganews or newshosting with a number of connections ranging from 20 to 50. What would be the best way to test for sustained internet speeds? I just upgraded to gigabit internet, and while okla's gives a blazing 700mbps for the 10 seconds this test takes to complete, I higly suspect this test to be favored by ISP because it really doesn't tell the whole story with sustained download speeds. u/RoweDent created this awesome resource on network theory u/tht1kidd_ has created a suggestion post regarding information everyone needs to provide when asking a question about their network There have been some excellent guides written in this sub, and we're always looking for more!
